Why Vaccination Matters

Vaccines protect your dog against serious, sometimes fatal, infectious diseases. In Singapore, vaccination guidelines for dogs and cats are developed by the NParks/Animal & Veterinary Service and the Singapore Veterinary Association. Vaccines are divided into CORE (recommended for every dog) and NON-CORE (recommended on case-by-case basis).

Vaccines At A Glance

VACCINE TYPE PROTECTS AGAINST
Distemper Core Serious virus affecting respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems — can be fatal
Parvovirus Core Highly contagious, can cause severe vomiting , bloody diarrhoea; often fatal in puppies
Adenovirus Core Infectious canine hepatitis and a component of kennel cough
Leptospirosis* Non-core

Bacterial infection spread via water and rodent urine. Can also infect people.

*Technically non-core but in Singapore’s environment, this poses a real risk, and most of the core vaccine brands commonly used here already come with Leptospirosis coverage

Kennel cough Non-core Infectious respiratory disease complex; recommended for dogs that board, attend daycare, or mix with many other dogs etc
Rabies Non-core Singapore has been rabies-free since 1953; only needed for overseas travel

Schedule

Dog core vaccination schedule 6–8 weeks First dose DHPPi (core) 10–12 weeks Booster 1 Core vaccines 14–16 weeks Booster 2 Core vaccines Yearly Annual booster

Note: Adult dogs receiving up-to-date vaccinations may not always need automatic yearly boosters. Speak to your vet to see if your dog can do a titre check, to see if they require any top up.

.

Post-Vaccination Care

- Rest for 24 hours after the appointment: mild lethargy or soreness at the injection site is possible
- Other serious side effects eg: swelling, breathing difficulties etc, please let a vet know ASAP
- Keep your vaccination booklet or digital records safe — needed for boarding, grooming, and travel
