Why Vaccination Matters

Vaccines protect your cat against serious, sometimes fatal, infectious diseases. In Singapore, vaccination guidelines for dogs and cats are developed by the NParks/Animal & Veterinary Service and the Singapore Veterinary Association. Vaccines are divided into CORE (recommended for every cat) and NON-CORE (recommended on case-by-case basis).

Vaccines At A Glance

VACCINE TYPE PROTECTS AGAINST
Herpesvirus Core Feline viral rhinotracheitis — severe cat flu causing sneezing, eye discharge, and nasal congestion; virus stays lifelong once contracted.
Calicivirus Core Upper respiratory infection; mouth ulcers, sneezing, worse signs if severe.
Parvovirus Core Feline panleukopenia — highly contagious and often fatal, especially in kittens; causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea.

Feline

Leukaemia (FELV)

Non-core Can cause suppression of immune system. Not commonly given in Singapore. Speak to your vet should you wish to learn more about effectiveness and testing prior to vaccination.
Chlamydia Non-core Bacterial infection causing conjunctivitis; recommended for multi-cat households or cats at higher exposure risk.
Rabies Non-core Singapore has been rabies-free since 1953; only needed for overseas travel.

Schedule

Cat core vaccination schedule: first dose at 6-8 weeks, boosters at 10-12 and 14-16 weeks, then yearly

Post-Vaccination Care

- Rest for 24 hours after the appointment: mild lethargy or soreness at the injection site is possible
- Should swelling or lumps appear/persist at injection site after weeks or months, please let your vet know
- Other serious side effects eg: swelling, breathing difficulties etc, please let a vet know ASAP
- Keep your vaccination booklet or digital records safe — needed for boarding, grooming, and travel
